The Under Dogs: Walking Lucky and Bug

The Under Dogs - Kate Roxburgh and Shae Kuehlman, who are performing a sketch show called 'Shakespeare's Monkeys' - tell us about their two dogs, who they have brought to the festival...

Attempting to stand out at the Edinburgh Festival takes youth and a sense of the ridiculousness - the latter we have, so to counter the lack of not being 17 and full of beans we decided to bring the dogs and dress them up for a laugh. "Lucky" a black German Shepherd/Wolf and "Bug" a white Samoyed!

Now when asking us what is the most exciting thing about the festival we would both say "Veggie Haggis" from our favourite hidden gem and oldest Edinburgh pub The Sheeps Heid Inn. The dogs on the other hand are unanimous about their favourite spot and that is without a doubt The Bog. Unfortunately that is not the name of a pub. The bog sits at the foot of Arthurs Seat and is like a mud spa for dogs. It causes a disarming stench and quite often a case of the runs, which is not exactly the glamorous image we were aiming for.

Luckily during our comedy sketch show we get to glam it up Glee-style in our Addidas track suits and some wigs, giving us some sense of the party that is the Edinburgh Festival. Our show is called Shakespeare's Monkeys, because we both have a love of Shakespeare and animals. We met when we were three months old on a farm - both our parents had exchanged us for a pig with a Balinese family, and so we began to write together. The show is also named after our grandparents who were both aptly called Shakespeare and Monkey, but sadly also passed away before seeing how talented we are.

The Under Dogs: Bug

Now the tricky part about Edinburgh for us is finding the dog friendly haunts to have dinner and drink at. Originally we had the cast the dogs alongside us to perform, however we had to fire them after they kept upstaging us and forgetting their lines. So as payback we now have to include them in our evening drinking sessions or they will pack their bones and move onto greener pastures. So we are on the hunt and so far the only central place that allows furies inside is Petit Paris on Grassmarket - trust the French to have all the class, and the food is great too.

So keep an eye out for us at The Three Sisters Gothic Room at 12 noon doing our sketch show Shakespeare's Monkeys or every morning and afternoon hiking up to the top of Arthur's Seat to catch the best view in Edinburgh with two very large, stinky, happy dogs. And more than likely a hair of the dog somewhere after that!

'The Under Dogs: Shakespeare's Monkeys' is at The Three Sisters at 12.15pm. It's free. Listing
