It's something I was too young to see when it aired, but I've gone back and looked at some of his stuff, as my dad adored him. He's fantastic, completely underrated now in my opinion.

The Thames show in the late '70s was funny, and the first couple of years on the BBC in the early 1980s. After that it got progressively more witless and crap.

Sorry for reviving an old forum thread, but I wish to ask a question.

I've seen some sources saying that the BBC complained that the name of Cupid Stunt was too offensive and so was changed to "Mary Hinge". However, other sources say the character was originally Mary Hinge and then changed to Cupid Stunt.

Which came first, Stunt or Hinge?

Page 192 of the book "Cupid Stunts - the Life & Radio Times of Kenny Everett" by David & Caroline Stafford states:

"When Cupid's name caused problems in high places, Barry (Cryer) suggested an alternative spoonerism - Mary Hinge. On balance it was considered safer to stick with Cupid Stunt. The Radio Times got round the problem by referring to her merely as 'Cupid'. And by series two her fame had outgrown the spoonerism..."

At the time I was never really aware of the name. Was it actually used at the time or introduced later?

I can't see anything about it in the obituary (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/obituary-kenny-everett-1614235.html) but it seemed to say that he died of AIDS. This was over 20 years ago but even if it's true it's a bit indiscrete? (After all obituaries are famous for not saying the whole truth like "they never married" and "they never suffered fool's gladly"). Anyone have further details here?

Yes, a good friend of mine told me about this thing called the internet, which contains a reference source called Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenny_Everett#Illness_and_death

Or you could just read the book mentioned by Bunter, which has a good Tommy Cooper story, among others, and mentions the 1985 Kenny Everett Christmas special, which co-starred Spike Milligan and Peter Cook: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBvHMC-WoYs

And of course Kenny Everett did marry and I think maybe he still was when he died.

No. He and his wife Lee announced their impending divorce in September 1983 and were divorced in 1984, although they remained close friends. In his will, he left everything to his sister, Kate. Not much fun focusing on his passing though. So, here's Kenny and Billy Connolly predating David Walliams: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ym7IEBntjuY
