Grammar Innit

Gramatically, are these sentences both correct? Think they are.......

"Switch the light on !"

and

"Switch on the light !"

I would say no, cos you've put a space before the exclamation mark ;)

There's some school of thought that would say the first one is technically incorrect, as there's something about not ending sentences with prepositions. But, given that the first one is the one that sounds most naturally correct, I think they've both fine. In fact, maybe that one's preferable, tbh.

That's my opinion, for all the use that is...

Dan

Thanks Dan. They both sound correct to me.

Would you please put the light switch in to the on position.

You'll hate me for this, but in this sentence "on" is used as an adjective, not as a preposition. (See http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=on #38.)

Anyway, you can say it either way.

Nope, it's an adverb.

Using a preposition at the end of a sentence can be technically correct, but it is often stylistically poor. Here though, it matters not; the general rule of thumb is go with how it sounds.

(Sorry, but this stuff is my porn.)

You're right. Looking for a new job now...

Is this for character's speech, coz it's irrelevant really isn't it?

About the space before the exclamation mark; you could find some actors for whom after they say something dramatic, like to pause before they make the necessary facial expression to go with it. :D

For that kind of actor, surely you'd need to put "(APPROPRIATE DRAMATIC FACIAL EXPRESSION)" in before it!

Calm down everyone. I think this controversial thread needs some moderation, and adjudication from the Master.

Where is you Aaron?

If it's dialogue, your character will control which useage, whether it be correct or otherwise.
