Writing a Short Story Page 4

It's shit advice though.
Smug, self congratulatory and nonsensical.

I don't know if someone wanted a screenplay, they'd be satisfied if you gave them a story as an example of your work, though.

Obviously.
You would need to write it.
But the hardest thing is coming up with a compelling story that's tell-able in 100 minutes.

Any tips? I am about to attempt my first. Haven't really got a clue where to start or what kind of things I should be thinking about. Might be a comedy, might not.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Write a long story and then shorten it.

Cool

The Hobbit?

The Hobbit?

Probably tell-able in 60 minutes - rather than the nine hours Jackson's devoting to it!

I saw first one a few days ago. My jaw is still on the floor. Never mind the rewriting has he no concept of editing?

Second one's no better.
He's had to add a love-interest to stretch the bloody thing.
Very Tolkein.

He was given a glass of wonderful champagne and pissed in it to make it bigger.

You two are being very unfair.

He made the dwarfs pretty.
Well, he made lead-dwarf pretty and romantic-interest-dwarf pretty.

It's what Tolkien would have wanted.

It was utter shite.

The Hobbit was a wonderful book about personal courage and wit, where the violence happened in the background.

So by making it a CGI punchup like LOTR it was a tonal mess that had nothing, to do with anything.

I do not disagree, my lovely Soots.

The Hobbit has been John Wayne Bobbited

Also the technology for filming tall actors as short is stealing work from proper acting midgets, cut the little guys and gals a break already

Ahoy notorious MP I wanted to ask a favour.

I'm trying to join a novel writing group and because I am a lowly kdp writer, they insisted I sent a sample....of writing

If I wrote 5-10,ooo words of something would you give me a professional look at it.

I'd be most grateful.

Heh, heh, by which of course I mean, let your first draft flow freely from your fingers & get down the story then edit it and tighten it to give it more punch.

Here's a short, short one I wrote back in 1994, which took quite a lot of effort to shorten it to the target of 250 words. (From an idea by Ken Haylock).

Free-Fall by Bill Williams.

"One, two, three, GERONIMO!" he shouted silently as he stepped
off the tailgate of the Argosy.

"Oh bugger", he shrieked as he felt the extreme freedom and
flexibility of his spine when he manoeuvred into the classic
belly-down free fall position. He brought his arms and legs
back in and tipped his head down and his body into the
vertical drop while he made a redundant check, which confirmed:
no reserve, no main chute!

The blast of his slipstream was clearing the mugginess of the
antihistamine, and he remembered, he hadn't meant to drop
today and had only gone up to ensure the novices would be OK.
"Bloody Hay-fever, you'll be the death of me yet!".
A wry smile buffeted around his face as he recognised the
truth in this thought.

Can they save me he thought as he looked at the others below him,
but most were novices and the instructors were busy shepherding
their charges and of course they were not expecting him.

With a fatalistic shrug, he plunged past the novices,
head down with his arm in the military salute position. Then he maintained this
tight pose, to get maximum speed to try for the ultimate: the loop-the-loop, with double twist roll.

Swoosh!

"Eureka", he shouted at his success,
then he chose the hardest concrete in sight,
and flew himself in for his final landing.

Perhaps not the ideal story for a week in which one of the lead News stories is about harm-yourself website.
