St Trinian's is based on the first film of the original series, 1954's The Belles Of St. Trinian's. It sees the school faced with financial ruin, until the girls get involved with some horse racing.
The earlier St. Trinian's films established the franchise tradition of a male lead playing the female headmistress, with Alastair Sim initially taking the role.
A deleted scene featuring a meeting between Geoffrey Thwaite, Minister for Education, and his staff includes a reference to the often-forgotten fifth St. Trinian's film, The Wildcats Of St. Trinian's.
