  • BBC3 gives Comedy Feeds sitcom pilot Sunny D a full series
  • Writer and star Dane Baptiste says he is incredibly happy to be making more
  • Four new episodes will be broadcast next year

Sunny D, the TV comedy written by and starring comedian Dane Baptiste, has been given a full series by BBC Three.

The commission follows the broadcast of a trial episode earlier this year. The pilot was created as part of the BBC's Comedy Feeds 2015 pilot strand, and was first broadcast on BBC iPlayer.

In Sunny D, Dane Baptiste plays a fictionalised version of himself. The character still lives with his parents in a "crammed box room which he shares with his Mum's cleaning equipment." Other characters in the show include his twin sister; and Steve, Dane's boss who represents everything that Dane is determined to escape from.

The BBC describes Sunny D as "a smart, fast-paced and stylish sitcom that captures the angst of the quarter-life crisis, family, love and loss, from Dane's perspective. Trapped in a mundane 9-5 job and still living at home with his moody twin and unsympathetic parents, Dane dreams of his escape."

It has been confirmed that sitcom veteran Don Warrington, who has previously been in shows such as Rising Damp, will return to play Dane's father in the series.

Talking about the news, Dane Baptiste says: "I'm incredibly happy that Sunny D has been commissioned! It represents the possibility of the mainstream opening the comedy landscape to a new perspective and the resurrection of the Black British sitcom. I grew up watching sitcoms on the BBC, so to have them invest in my own project is an opportunity that I relish and am grateful for."

Four new episodes will be filmed next year, for broadcast on BBC Three later that year. The channel will be an online-only station by that point, however like all BBC Three series the series should receive a repeat on BBC Two or BBC One after its iPlayer run.

Damian Kavanagh from BBC Three says: "We're excited to have Dane and Sunny D on BBC Three. BBC Three will always be the home of the best and brightest new comedy talent."

Executive Producer Rebecca Papworth comments: "Sunny D gives full flight to rising star Dane Baptiste's comic rage against an unsympathetic universe. It is laugh out loud, imaginative, compelling and honest storytelling from a big name of the future."

The pilot of Sunny D, which is 15 minutes long, is currently being repeated late-night on BBC Three. The episode is also available to watch on BBC iPlayer for another six months.
