John Alderton landed the role of teacher Bernard Hedges after Frank Muir - LWT's Head of Entertainment at the time - was particularly impressed by his role as a teacher in the first episode of one of the broadcaster's first sitcoms, Never A Cross Word.
Although it could never be legally proven, an American sitcom first broadcast in 1975, Welcome Back, Kotter was a clear copy of Please Sir!, lock stock and barrel.
