Harry Worth is the leader of the brass band in the little town of Nettlebridge. So small is the community that this dithering bungler seems to be at the heart of all its activities.

Wanting the best for his troupe of musicians, he gets them to record a track for Terry Wogan's radio programme, with typical lack of success, and even tries to enter the band in the Guiness Book of Records by playing at high altitude in a series of hot air balloons.

But his responsibilities don't end with band life, as he becomes ringleader of protests against the construction of a new airport on the town's doorstep.
