The first series was in fact two separate commissions. An initial run of 3 episodes - BBC Four's normal comedy series length - were ordered (directed by Annie Griffin), and proved so popular with BBC executives that a second batch of 3 were hastily commissioned to comprise a total of 6 episodes, the length of a regular sitcom series. The second batch were directed by Simon Hynd.
