Best Medicine, a Radio 4 comedy format hosted by Kiri Pritchard-McLean which focuses on medical science, is to return for a new series.

Following on from the pilot that was broadcast in July, a 10 episode run of the show has now been ordered from producers Large Time Productions.

Radio 4 explains: "Hosted by Kiri, the show celebrates medicine's inspiring past, present and future. It's about little-known facts and deep dives into the weird and wonderful science, happy accidents, and pioneering characters of medicine.

"Each week Kiri challenges a panel of medical experts and a comedian to each make a case for what they think is the 'best medicine', and each guest champions an invention, a technique, a pill, potion, or person. Whether it's world-changing science, an obscure invention, an everyday treatment, or an unsung hero, it's always something worth celebrating."

The pilot episode, which is still available to listen to via BBC Sounds, saw medical historian Dr Lindsey Fitzharris championing face-saving masks, comedian Darren Harriott singing the praises of life-enhancing dancing, biomedical engineer Professor Eleanor Stride and her cancer-curing nano bubbles, and brain surgeon Mark Wilson with the life-saving GoodSAM technology.

Kiri Pritchard-McLean says: "I'm so delighted Best Medicine has snagged itself a series. I LOVED hosting the pilot and not only did I have a blast, I now have a raft of facts ready for my next pub quiz."

Producer Ben Worsfield comments: "The pilot proved medicine can be as funny as it is inspiring, with some incredible guests who shared their extraordinary knowledge with us. There are so many more people, procedures, potions and pills to explore in the series and we're so lucky to have Kiri - she's the perfect host to celebrate all the funny and fascinating facts from the amazing experts and comedians we've lined up."
