It's been a challenging few years for the Edinburgh Fringe, in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and with ongoing discontent about the costs associated with visiting and performing at the festival. We spoke to Karen Koren, founder and artistic director of the Gilded Balloon, one of the "Big Four" venues, and her daughter Katy Koren, also artistic director of the business, about adapting to these difficult times, what they're looking for in comedians appearing at their venues and the future of the Fringe.
