10 top tens for Hot Fuzz's tenth

This year, after watching Hot Fuzz for the tenth time, and still picking up little details I'd never noticed before, I went down to the pub for a glass of celebratory cranberry juice. I thought Anglonerd magazine, too, should celebrate the brilliance of this film in a big way, so here is not just a top ten list, but ten top ten lists, highlighting the best one hundred things about Edgar Wright's comedy action flick. *Spoilers*

Jaime Pond, Anglonerd, 14th February 2017

A crack squad of British actors are on parade in this loving homage to the cherished TV sitcom. Toby Jones is the pompous Captain Mainwaring, Bill Nighy the insouciant Sergeant Wilson and Michael Gambon is Private Godfrey, while Catherine Zeta-Jones brings some unlikely glamour to wartime Walmington-on-Sea. Hamish McColl's screenplay has its moments, but can't quite access the lovely, characterful warmth of TV series writers David Croft and the recently deceased Jimmy Perry.

'Swingers' invade Dad's Army film location

The coastal location in Bridlington, North Yorkshire, has attracted swingers to the town where stars including Catherine Zeta-Jones and Bill Nighy shot the new film.

The lovable collection of silvery expats returns for an inevitable sequel. Dev Patel's Sonny is expanding his Jaipur hotel business, with the help of Maggie Smith's Muriel; foxy old Richard Gere may be able to help them with that. Meanwhile, Judi Dench and Bill Nighy dither around romance, while Celia Imrie's Madge has her choice of men. Twinkly charm is guaranteed, but that's enough now.

Paul Howlett, The Guardian, 22nd January 2016

This quirky comedy, based on Deborah Moggach's novel, takes an A-list of aged Brit thesps - Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson - and plonks them in a crumbling hotel in Rajasthan, as economic migrants seeking a cheaper retirement.

Pride review - power in an unlikely union

Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton and George MacKay sparkle in this tale of lesbian and gay activists' support for the miners' strike.

Mark Kermode, The Guardian, 14th September 2014

A new film of Dad's Army is to be made, which is a brave move on the part of all involved. Few TV programmes are so inextricably associated with the people who played the main characters rather than with plot or place. To imagine someone other than Arthur Lowe playing Captain Mainwaring is hard, though Bill Nighy stepping into John Le Mesurier's shoes as Sergeant Wilson is less difficult to envisage. Jimmy Perry, whose co-author David Croft died three years ago, said he was letting the film-makers "get on with it". But in the mid-Seventies, the show was a national institution, with audiences sometimes in excess of 18 million. A sympathetic reworking of the original will be a considerable achievement given the special place that Dad's Army has in the nation's heart. As Corporal Jones might have said (and presumably will say again): "Don't panic".
