Joe Pasquale is reportedly set to take on the role of Frank Spencer in a new stage show version of Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em.

The Sunday People reports that Pasquale has been awarded the role after "wowing" producers at a read-through earlier in the month.

A source told the newspaper: "Joe is really looking forward to the role. He went down a storm. The tour will go all over the country. People still love Frank and it's sure to be a big hit. Producers are still working out the exact details."

Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em, which starred Michael Crawford as the hapless Frank Spencer with Michele Dotrice playing his long-suffering wife Betty, launched on BBC television in 1973. Written by Raymond Allen, it ran for 22 episodes across three series, before coming to a close in 1978. However, Crawford and Dotrice revived their characters earlier this year for a Comic Relief TV sketch. It would appear they are not involved in the plans to bring the format to the stage.

Speaking about plans to stage the sitcom, a spokesman said: "This is something we're looking at, but it's not likely to come to fruition till 2018."

Pasquale, who won I'm A Celebrity in 2004, is set to perform a new stand-up tour in 2017.
