2018 Edinburgh Fringe

Naomi McDonald interview

Naomi McDonald

BCG spent a few minutes talking to up-and-coming impressionist Naomi McDonald, to get the lowdown on her Edinburgh experience...

What's the one lifesaver you're glad you packed?

Antihistamines are with me at all times. I think I'm allergic to Edinburgh, but that's ok - I can do a month of sneezing my face off for the love of the arts.

Have you noticed anything different about the Fringe this year?

More people, less pavement at the Fringe this year - which shows more and more people are cottoning on to how bloody cool it is! Also Bristo Square has been pimped up this year! I like it a lot.

Where's the place you go to escape the madness!?

The only peace and quiet at the Fringe is your bed. Well... unless you get lucky. Otherwise I sometimes pop to Fringe Central to charge my phone and listen to the calm sounds of printers.

Where do you like to relax after a show?

George Square is currently my post-show hang out. It's absolutely rammed with people but it's got a great vibe and delicious food. I buy a box of noodles from Ting Thai Caravan stand (OMFG best fest-food ever!) and 'people watch' for a bit. That really chills me out and then I can hit the beer with friends once I feel like a normal person again.

What shows have you seen that really stand out?

Abandoman is one of my all-time favs at the Fringe. He is an insanely talented improviser who turns the audience's suggestions into a fully formed rap in seconds! It's crazy good. GO.

What's been the highlight of your Fringe so far?

I had a Mac 'n' cheese- grilled cheese sandwich last night. It was PASTA in BREAD and it took me to another level of happiness. I hope to make it to more shows, if I don't have to queue too long for my cheese sensation, which I plan to eat every single day onwards.

What can people expect from your show?

Stardumb is everything I love about comedy, crammed into an hour of impressions, singing, stand-up and even a dance! I'm letting you in on the secret lives of stars. Nigella Lawson defrosts meals in her bathtub, Melania Trump creates a musical for the next Edinburgh Fringe and Adele sings her heart out over a custard cream.

Sum up your Fringe experience in a word...

BEROCCA.
