George Egg: 10 Edinburgh Fringe questions

George Egg

George Egg answers 10 questions about his 2016 Edinburgh Fringe show...

Give us a quick overview of your comedy career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?

I started in OMG 1992, when I did my first gig at Up The Creek in Greenwich at the tender age of 19. For decades I rather slogged it around the circuit and only in the last few years do I feel I've started doing stuff that's more interesting and unusual. And yes, I'm very happy with where I'm at just now.

Tell us two truths and one lie about yourself (but mix them up, keep us guessing!).

1. Salad cream is my favourite condiment.

2. My pets have always had human names (Matthew, Boris, Agnes, Ruth, John etc).

3. I have trophies for winning ice skating competitions when I was a teenager.

Describe your new show in exactly 23 words.

I cook a three course meal using the appliances you'd find in a hotel room and the audience eat it at the end.

Any cunning plans to get more punters in?

Well the promise of genuinely tasty freshly cooked food (including a poached sea bass, or sea bream depending on what I can 'land') has to be a pretty good one.

What's your plan for trying to eat - and drink - healthily during the Fringe?

The irony is that despite cooking a gourmet meal on stage every day I never get to eat it (the audience do) so I end up having takeaways and ready meals. So frankly my plan is to accept that I WON'T be eating healthily and look forward to the inevitably poor diet. I'll address my ballooning weight when I get home.

What will you miss most while you're away from home?

John, and Matthew (see Question 2)

Aside from performing, what else are you looking forward to doing in Scotland's fine capital?

I'm a sucker for foreign supermarkets and their differing produce and while I know Scotland isn't THAT far away they do still have a bunch of things we don't in Brighton. So I'm looking forward to dropping boxes of oven ready chip and battered haggis dinners into my trolley (see Question 5)

If you took over programming a Fringe venue, what would your perfect line-up of comedians be?

A 90 minute show that featured Sara Pascoe (reading from her book 'Animal', I'm listening to the audio book and it's a delight), Jonny and The Baptists, Lucie Pohl and Tim Key.

Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.

Any comedians who I know who've read these answers and weren't listed in Question 8.

Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,800+ other Fringe offerings listed on BCG this year?

Because it's really different, and I'm incredibly enthusiastic about it both on and off stage. And you get free food.

'George Egg: Anarchist Cook' is at Gilded Balloon at 5:45pm until the 24th August. Listing
