Which One's Fergal? review

Garrett Millerick

Garrett Millerick sure knows how to put together a varied assortment of addictive sketch characters. His introductory creation, the hip-hop motivational speaker 'Skillz', starts off proceedings. It may not be the most compelling of characters to begin with actually; the overexcited and assertive nature clashes with his other slightly more unhurried, deadpan and pragmatic characters.

The overzealous hand gesticulation of the policeman and the unctuous smugness of the advertising executive were very favourable. Meanwhile his political characters were very funny, and worryingly realistic: The stuttering, autocue reading labour MP; the childish, backpack-wearing just-glad-to-be-here liberal; and pompous, drunken Tory made for a trio of amusement which hit the spot. The Liberal's poster campaign was a definite highlight, but Skillz closing poetry/rap was rather long and just didn't generate the level of laughs that Millerick had earned elsewhere during the course of the hour.

While not rip-roaringly funny, Which One's Fergal? is a perfect example of a low-key show assuring a laugh here and there, and does give a professional dose of well-acted sketch character comedy.
