Life's Too Short Page 50

Israel's The Saddest Sketch Show in the World sounds intriguing

I literally burst out laughing when I heard that news. (Best entertainment that show provided, incidentally.) The last sad attempt of the BBC to have something to cling on to about that dreadful programme?

I agree with Aaron. My first thought was "great something to inflate the Gervais ego". I can't believe it's up for anything and hope it's not taking into account when considering 2nd series.

Do you think one day it might explode? It must be getting awfully dangerous to stand near that thing now.

Given the poor reception it's received here, and the critical mauling in America, I would be astonished if a second series is commissioned.

Not sure how it got nominated, but given that it's up against the far worse 'Friday Night Dinner' I suspect the answer may involve a dart board.

I believe they're put forward by the broadcasters. I assume there's some kind of d'Or panel that then makes a shortlist.

Don't want to be cynical but when poor shows got put forward for awards it makes me think maybe shows aren't chosen on quality alone but maybe a preexisting relationship with award body and production company etc. Maybe wrong but just don't understand it.

A second series of Life's Too Short was already commissioned back in December, Gervais confirmed it in a tweet. It's going to air in Spring 2013.

Oh yes, and if 'comedy genius' Ricky Gervais had been awarded a recommission, where were the floods of BBC press releases gloating and proclaiming their brilliance at having secured his services?

Gervais's tweet merely suggested he was working on ideas for a second series, and a number of foolhardy news outlets jumped upon it. Anyone who thinks an HBO co-production would be recommissioned before HBO had aired it, or who believes news of a big-name commission such as this would go months without an official press release, needs their head examining. (If you can dig one up, of course, I'll happily defer, but...)

In any case, all my sources suggest that BBC Comedy are deeply embarrassed by the series, with staff ordered to keep on-message in support of it. Not a ringing endorsement!

I think Gervais' tweet has been treated with suspicion - certainly I don't think a formal announcement has been made of a second series.

It hasn't really received a critical mauling in the USA. The AVclub has given it a C+ and C for the two episodes shown, with slightly higher community vote. If you do a Google news search you can see from the 100+ headlines reviews are pretty mixed at worst.
