BBC sitcom Producer and Director, famous for Keeping Up Appearances, Dad's Army and The Dick Emery Show, takes us behind the scenes
Keeping Up Appearances is one of the best-loved British sitcoms and has now been seen in more than sixty countries around the globe, with a particularly huge following in the USA. The show, originally broadcast on the BBC from 1990 to 1995, starred Patricia Routledge as the unforgettable Hyacinth Bucket – pronounced 'Bouquet'! – the incorrigible snob whose desperate attempts at social climbing always end in disaster and humiliation.

Keeping Up Appearances has had five series (plus four Christmas specials), that were all produced and directed by Harold Snoad. His directing credits already included such classics as Dad's Army and The Dick Emery Show.

In this hugely entertaining memoir of the series, Snoad takes us behind the scenes and into the hurly-burly world of TV production – from location shooting in the city streets of Britain's Midlands and the glamorous lounges of the QE2, to the daily grind of schedules and rewrites and the shenanigans and foibles of the actors.

Witty and revealing, It's Bouquet – Not Bucket offers both an exclusive insight into great British situation comedy, and a comprehensive guide to one of its greatest examples, Keeping Up Appearances.

· Harold Snoad directed Dad's Army, Keeping Up Appearances, The Dick Emery Show, Are You Being Served?

· Worked with Ronnie Barker, John Inman, Eric Sykes, John Cleese,
Leslie Phillips, Geraldine McEwan, Susan Hampshire and Dick Emery

· Now in theatre, directed the stage play Say Who You Are

· He is the author of the BBC publication, Directing Situation Comedy (1988).

A book I would recommend for any Keeping Up Appearances fan!

Discuss this book here:

Seems interesting. I wonder how long it will be until Aaron moves this thread to the DVD and Other Merchandise forum.

I'm pretty sure that this has been mentioned elsewhere. Anyway, I found it in a bookshop about a month ago. Some really interesting stuff. I'll definitely get it, and I'd certainly recommend it to a fan of the show, or of that kind of comedy in general.

Are you sure you saw it in a book-shop, as it's not been released yet. ;)

There's no need to be sarcastic.

Oh, I think you'll find that there's every need to be sarcastic. ;)

Seriously though, I did see it a number of weeks ago and it is a good book. I'll certainly get it at some point.

Read the Bouquet! - Not Bucket! book, it was in our local conventry library, very funny, I'd recommend to others interested. I love the way Hyacinth is portrayed.

I agree it is very funny, but also gives a great insight to the series. Great images as well, I suppose I am lucky as I have them all in colour for use in my fan club magazines.
