Artist Henry Crossley's wife is holidaying with her Aunt - or so he believes, until Aunt Ida arrives to find out why she hasn't turned up.
With no sign of her niece anywhere a police investigation begins, and a Sunday newspaper's crime reporter, Mike Billings, is soon also hot on the trail - followed eagerly by his colleague, society reporter Jenny Drew, bored at her tedious work and keen to work on a real story for once.
As the authorities begin questioning Henry and Ida inconsistencies and mixed stories begin to emerge on both sides; and Inspector Corcoran is none too pleased with the journalists' presence, never far behind him - and occasionally just in front.
Bounding from witness to witness, and Scotland Yard back to the country, the truth of Mrs. Crossley's disappearance must surely come to the fore; but the biggest question remains whether it'll be the police or the reporters who get there first!
