Comedians on I'm A Celebrity

Jenny Eclair

It's hard to comprehend that ITV challenge show I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! has been around for nearly two decades. Can it really have been on air for 20 series? The fact presenters Ant & Dec don't appear to have aged perhaps adds to the illusion it's still quite a new and fresh format.

Then again, looking back at the line-up of the 2002 series, there is a reminder of how time has moved on. Tony Blackburn, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson and Nell McAndrew were amongst the camp mates that year. Notably for us, there was a comedian in the line-up too, Rhona Cameron... She's faded from fame somewhat since (although did pop up in BBC Three comedy Back To Life last year as a receptionist).

It's interesting that Cameron's fame faded. Nowadays, appearing on the programme can be a real boost for a comedian's career. Not only does the big appearance fee help deal with any debts accrued from the years of having to build up your stage craft by driving around the country for no money, but it's a way of introducing yourself to millions of new viewers quickly too.

Betway have recently published a blog analysing the profile of the typical winner of the show - they're predicting Strictly's AJ Pritchard will win this time. Although it's by no means a guarantee.

Sadly there are no comedians on the show this year, but here's a look at three comedy stars who have appeared in the jungle before. They all happen to begin with the letter J...

Joe Pasquale

The squeaky-voiced entertainer appeared in Series 4 of the format, in 2004... and won! He became the first contestant to earn full stars in a bushtucker trial that saw him have to climb down a latter suspended from a helicopter.

Coming top of the vote certainly gave his career a major boost. Tickets for his subsequent live shows flew out the door, after he left the jungle. Since then he's forged out a number of stage roles for himself, including playing Frank Spencer in Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em Live.

Jenny Eclair

Jenny Eclair came third in the tenth series of the challenge show. Her appearance was notable in that she had previously somewhat slagged off the programme by writing in a blog that "the celebrity jungle thing on the telly makes me feel sick". However, in 2010, she accepted the invite, admitting later that she did so as her career was "looking shaky" at that point.

Writing in Radio Times she explained that appearing on the show was indeed "career Viagra", noting her subsequent twelve months were an absolute "hoot". She also tellingly exclaimed: "How else is a 50-something woman ever going to get on primetime telly?"

Joel Dommett

Joel Dommett

Arguably one of the comedians to most benefit from their time on I'm A Celeb has been Joel Dommett. He came second in the 2016 series (Scarlett Moffatt won) and, in the process, picked up a whole new legion of fans - including a number of fans who had started paying attention when he began showering with his top off. His live tour sold out soon after, and it opened the doorway for him to publish his memoirs too.

He continued to be linked to the show, by being signed up to host the Extra Camp spin-off on ITV2 for the next year, which he co-presented up until the end of 2019. He's most certainly stayed in touch with ITV since too, as he's made a number of TV series with the network. He can currently be seen fronting comedy panel show Hey Tracey! on ITV2, and he fronts the network's latest talent show import too, The Masked Singer.
