In this new, combined history and multi-biography, Robert Ross and Gemma Ross tell the story of the iconic women of the Carry On film series.

With contributions throughout from co-star Valerie Leon, it pays tribute to a range of the female faces seen on screen, both famous and forgotten - from Barbara Windsor and Hattie Jacques to Sally Douglas, Imogen Hassall and beyond.

Often derided and dismissed as mere titillating eye candy for the male viewers, these women and the characters they portrayed were almost always feisty and fearless - "an early and earnest manifestation of Girl Power in the British film industry". Whether the beauty pageant-protesting women of Carry On Girls itself, the wives and girlfriends who beat the men at their own game in Carry On Cabby, or any one of a wide array of nurses who get the better of their male colleagues and patients in the medical films, these are women deserving of rightful recognition in British comedy and cinema history.

Through never-before-seen publicity material, exclusive interviews with the girls themselves, a wealth of photography and affectionate biographies, this "long overdue salute" combines a history of the films their women with a look at the "continuing cult of the Carry On girl" today.
