Connolly, who will be 73 in November, has been performing for over 50 years now. After an apprenticeship as a welder in his hometown of Glasgow, he became a professional performer in 1962, forming the band The Humblebums with Gerry Rafferty, before going on to pursue a solo career as a comedian.

It is estimated he has now performed to over 10 million people on his worldwide tours. He has also appeared in many TV shows and films, picking up many awards along the way. Additionally, he is also now recognised as an artist, with his artwork displayed in various exhibitions throughout the UK since 2012.

Billy, who was awarded a CBE in 2003 and given the Freedom of the City of Glasgow in 2010, revealed in 2013 he had Parkinson's Disease. Speaking earlier this year he revealed the disease was now causing him some notable problems. "It's really affected my left hand and I can't play the banjo or guitar any more", he said.

This year Connolly has been busy filming Billy Connolly's Tracks Across America, a three-part ITV documentary series which will see him visit 28 states and 8,000 miles of cities, coast, mountains, desert and swamp.
