The legendary writing partnership of Ray Galton and Alan Simpson began in 1949, when the pair met whilst undergoing treatment for TB at Milford Sanitorium. By 1951, they were writing professionally for the BBC and they have since written over 600 scripts and won numerous awards for their work on radio, TV and film, including Hancock's Half Hour and Steptoe And Son.

BBC Radio 2 marks the 60th anniversary of their writing partnership with a series of half-hour comedies, starring Frank Skinner, Mitchell & Webb, Rik Mayall, June Whitfield and Paul Merton. The four episodes were originally written for television by Ray and Alan and especially adapted by them for this Radio 2 series.

Our Review: It was nice to hear some of comedy's current top stars performing these classic scripts and bringing them to a new audience. However, to be frank, in most cases (particularly The Blood Donor) the performances did not match the original broadcasts.

An additional problem was that Galton and Simpson attempted to update their scripts for a modern audience, but the result was that there were some jarring moments as certain lines still gave away the original setting (e.g. AA men still saluting their customers; and Gordon Brown in power, but the problem solving internet didn't seem to exist).

In summary: a nice thought, but it would have been a better celebration to just broadcast the original TV versions of these four episodes.
