Rhiannon Vivian answers 10 Edinburgh Fringe Questions

Rhiannon Vivian

Rhiannon Vivian tells us about bringing her debut solo AND debut written show to the 2015 Fringe.

1. Tell us about your career so far. Are you happy with where you're at?

I've always been in love with comedy. Somewhere in the vaults there's video footage of me and my friend doing sketches when we were about 11 - all teeth and bad hair! But thereafter I didn't really know how to make it a thing, so I ended up writing for a living. It wasn't until I discovered improv in 2008 that I found my performing feet, started doing shows and finally felt like I'd found my home. This is my first solo show and first written show.

2. Describe your show in exactly 23 words.

Based around my love/hate (ultimately love) relationship with flying, I combine personal reflections with a cabin full of deliciously daft and honest characters.

3. Why are you putting yourself through this famously stressful experience?

Because it's something I've always wanted to do and I don't think fear should stand in the way. I've had character ideas for years and I wanted to create a show that was completely my own, and just see what happens!

4. Any cunning plans to get more punters in?

I'd love to get people in who both love and hate flying! I think both can relate to my show. So I'll probably be asking people that when I flyer them. And it'd be super awesome if people saw it, and then decided to kick their fear of flying in the nuts. I'd feel very happy about that.

5. How much money do you think you'll lose/make this year?

So long as there's enough in the Free Fringe bucket for loo roll and beer, I'll be happy.

6. What's your weirdest past Fringe experience?

The year it was really sunny and I wore flip flops. It felt so wrong, I thought we were all going to die.

7. What other shows are you hoping to see?

So many! Honestly as much as I can without going mad. So there is a dedicated venue for improvised comedy and theatre for the first time this year - The Nursery at the King James Thistle Hotel - so I plan to spend time there watching super smashing improv until my head pops.

8. If you took over programming a venue, what would you perfect line-up of comedians be?

Bill Murray, Kristin Wiig (my absolute hero), Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Fred Armisen (bit of an SNL theme going here!), all the Pythons, I'd get The Mary Whitehouse Experience back together, The League of Gentlemen, Bucky (an improv group from New York who made me laugh until I literally sobbed - a very surreal experience), everyone who was in Airplane!, Christopher Guest, a real dragon and the poo emoji.

9. Name the one person you'd rather not bump into during the festival.

Anyone asking for directions. I descend into a puddle of panic and dyslexia and then worry I've sent them under rather than over (so many levels in Edinburgh).

10. Why should audiences pick your show over the 1,700+ other comedy offerings at this year's festival?

Because it's true, honest and funny and a little leftfield. If you like characters that are quirky, surreal, funny, silly and thoughtful, it's for you. If you like flying it's for you. If you hate flying it's for you, too! I hope to make you laugh, sigh, go 'oh my God, YES,' feel glad, feel sad but ultimately leave with a sense of marvel and wonder at our crazy old world. And hopefully also with renewed determination to kick whatever scares you personally in the nuts, while laughing in its face.

'Doors to Manual' is at 12:15pm at Cowgatehead on 22-29 August. Listing
