10 terrible student play must-haves

The Electra Project

The Electra Project is a new comedy about a group of A Level students putting on a modern day version of the Greek tragedy Electra. The student drama they produce is hilariously appalling. The play asks the question is making bad art a rite of passage or a self-indulgence society can do without?

What's the worst student play you have seen or been part of? Below is a list of must-haves for every terrible student drama:

1. The drama must be based around issues you have no experience of and massively inappropriate for student drama. Incest, rape, abortion, inter-tribal conflict in sub-Saharan Africa; that kind of thing.

2. The drama must include a badly executed and random physical sequence, usually to the music of Coldplay.

3. The drama must have a musical score that has no coherency, in terms of period or style and is instead just a collection of the director's favourite songs.

4. Sound cues must be mistimed and always too loud.

5. An act of sexual violence, usually underscored by a Prodigy song.

6. A girl, or indeed a group girls, will scream.

7. A girl will do a monologue in which she attempts to cry.

8. A boy will play his guitar because he can.

9. At some point someone will light a candle.

10. The cast will continue to cry in their curtain call to show how in character they are!

Inspired by Sir Ken Robinson's TED talk: How Schools Kill Creativity, The Electra Project is a new comedy play by Dave Jackson (ITV, Radio 4) that explores the demise of arts education in schools.

The Electra Project will be performed daily from 18th to 23rd August at 11:50am, at theSpace Surgeons Hall. Listing
