Hancock was a co-production between Hancock's own company, MacConkey Productions, and Associated Television, with MacConkey contracted to provide Hancock as the star, each programme's script, and receiving overseas and ultimate ownership of the series after its initial broadcasts.

Initially ordered as a six-episode series early in 1962, the commission was extended to thirteen programmes before production began.
