Still wickedly funny and powerfully satirical, this time we see Stephen Daker's growing confidence dwindle again. He's now the head of the practice, but Lyn has moved on, and so has Vice Chancellor Earnest Hemingway, replaced by someone even more ruthless: American businessman Jack Daniels.

The university is no longer a seat of learning, but instead "a new frontier of the Western Alliance", working on defence research. Jock calls it "a place of dark secrets, guarded by meat-faced thugs".

Stephen's new love interest is forthright Polish art historian Grete. The love triangle that develops involving a manipulative Rose Marie is compelling stuff, while elsewhere, Bob's love life takes a most unexpected turn!
