Born to an Irish father and English mother, Dave Allen was an observational, storytelling comedian and writer who first found television success in Australia before returning to the UK and Ireland. Initially working as a journalist and only later an entertainer and comic, he enjoyed huge popularity from the latter half of the 1960s, and was soon fronting his own BBC sketch and stand-up series. He was beloved for poking fun at institutions such as the Roman Catholic church in his comedy.
