Comedy actor Kris Marshall has been put into intensive care after being hit by a car. The 34-year-old actor, who won the British Comedy Award in 2002 for Best Newcomer for his performance as Nick Harper in My Family, is being treated at Bristol Royal Infirmary. His condition is said to be improving, but he remains in a serious way.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset police said: "There was a collision between a car and pedestrian shortly before 1am on Sunday. It happened in St Augustine's Parade in Bristol City Centre. A man in his 30s was taken to hospital with head injuries not considered to be life-threatening Police spoke to the driver of the car involved, which was a VW Polo. He stopped immediately after the collision and we are looking into how it happened. He was not a drink driver."

Marshall played the hapless, care-free job-swapping Nick in the BBC1 sitcom for five years. He has since gone on to play roles like 'Art' in the little-remembered My Life in Film, Colin Frissell in Love Actually, DS Luke Stone in Murder City and Matt in ITV's estate agent comedy drama Sold.

His latest project is Caledonia, a horror film set around a remote Scottish hotel. He is also currently in rehearsals to star in the new West End comedy stage show Fat Pig, alongside Gavin and Stacey star Joanna Page and Peep Show's Robert Webb.

UPDATE: Kris Marshall walked out of hospital about a week later and is now fully recovered
