Chris Langham Page 6

I have to say I can't agree with the posts that just react to 'Langham looked at Kiddie porn' and don't bother looking any further into it.

A lot of people are saying that they are sympathetic to what child porn does to the kids but completely disregard the existence of mental illness - which Chris Langham clearly has. If you are so passionate about stopping child porn then solely focusing on what punishment they deserve isn't going to be as useful as ALSO understanding what leads to people doing these things so you can spot those symptoms early on and try and stop people ever getting to the child porn stage. Surely preventing the crime is more useful than punishing it.

I've known people who have suffered mental illness and it is real and doesn't just happen to bad people - in fact it happens a lot to good, vulnerable people. They have all fully recovered and probably have more inner peace than any of us now. So saying they can never recover is uneducated rubbish. What is better: a criminal staying a criminal in jail or a criminal being realistically (in this case) treated for an illness and becoming a better person?

You can't solve a problem if you don't bother to try and understand it - our greatest failure as humans.

I don't think he will follow in Pete Townshend's footsteps, and get his career back on track after a scandal of this nature. My advice to Langham would be to retire from acting, and emigrate.

'accessory after the fact', though this is still not correct. Even so, as I say, looking at free content over the web is a nebulous issue. How can you define the damage Langham has caused by looking at these free images? Has he funded the making of such material? No. In this context the worst he has done is help reaffirm that there is a 'market' for it.

You serious? Economics works like this. If theres a demand for a good it will be supplied. Langham by looking at these pictures increases the demand for it and therefore encourages others to make more. The worst he has done is increased the chances of another child being abused. Why don't you go and ask the NSPCC or CEOP if your theory of no harm no foul works.

If we look at someone's human rights not to have someone look at footage of them being molested as a child, we are on very shaky ground indeed.

Yet again another misunderstanding of the Human Rights Act. It would have no effect.

Quote: James Williams @ January 16, 2008, 1:24 PM

I Of course it's wrong, but how much harm has it caused to any party, and what should the punishment be to fit the crime? Defining such problems is tricky, as our reactions are based largely on undefinable 'taboos', an intangible certainty that something is wrong and needs to be punished.

Not all taboos are bad, just look at the court case the other day where a guy married his sister.

It is closed-minded by definition, because you are judging them by a set of values created by our society.

Well who's values should I be judging them by :S

Quote: James Williams @ January 16, 2008, 1:24 PM

You have to look at other cultures very carefully indeed and try to abandon many preconceptions.

Who says that my attitudes are based on preconceptions? I admit I haven't been to every place in the world to try and understand them but when are you allowed to?

Quote: James Williams @ January 16, 2008, 1:24 PM

Even keeping one's own preconceptions it is obvious to see that different ways of life are rich and complex and can't be shrugged off with a derisory 'they're worthless and wrong' attitude. A "valid/invalid" binary analysis is an argument set at an absurdly low resolution.

>_< I think you got the impression i'm some sort of biggot. Someone made the point of how certain things are acceptable in other cultures that aren't acceptable here. I was trying to say that I ignore that. Honour killings are acceptable some places, would I ever consider carrying one out. Of course not.

Well lock him up then. Jesus! Laughing out loud Unless you're John Major and you want a crazed Paedo being cared for in the community ROFL

This type of response is exactly what I mean.

Oh very clever you take a joke to be serious. You want a serious response.

So a sexual fetish is a mental illness now. Well lock me up cos I light women who shout 'He-man! Master of the universe' when I cum. I should probably eat more Omega 3 to fix that :)

Ok you guys watch-it!

Yeah I can see that this could turn into an argument. Look ContainsNuts don't take my comments as a personal attack. When people say things like 'i've done this...' or 'I know a person...' any response to that post will be taken personally.

My first comment was a joke hence the smilies and the ROFL. My second response was semi-serious. I just don't beieve it is a mental illness just like being straight isn't a mental illness. If it came across as nasty I didn't mean it to be and I apologise

Mod school sunk in deep.

:)

Hey, didn’t AJP29 use to be a moderator??? I could’ve sworn he sent me a PM a few weeks ago telling me to behave myself or else I'd be banned.

Or was he just doing what that black woman from ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ did when she told Larry that he wasn’t allowed to take a bottle of water into the theatre. I dunno..

LOL!

I think i've said enough so i'll only respond to specific points put to me. Good night and good luck :)

There is something very wrong with the mind to look at these images. That is what I meant.

And if you watched his interview he was severely abused as a child and had mental issues throughout his life so that didn't help. I don't think you can discount that this had some effect on his mental health.

What he did was wrong though, but don't underestimate the power of a troubled mind.

Maybe it was worth Langham going through all this, just to prove we can be polite and civilized on here.

Pleased

Maybe it was.

I doubt it, but maybe.

(civilised*)
