Rather different from the usual item that appears in Critique, these are the first three video tutorials that I have created for my Scriptwriters' Toolkit.

And they are not funny at all !

So grumpy mean people from all over the world can Google[Scriptwriters Toolkit] then sneak in here to BCG, peek at that topic without contributing any knowledge or fun to BCG then slope off & download a free copy of SWT.

I have recently discovered that SWT does work correctly with Microsoft Office 2007 and 2010 {Word 2007 and 2010), but it requires a different installation procedure, which I will produce videos for later. There is not a version for Microsoft Office/Word on an Apple Mac.

Right: Back to this critique.

I've done three short video tutorials so far and they are very time consiuming to do and it will need quite a few more to cover it thoroughly, so I'm presenting them here for criticism so that I can tell if I am on the right track in doing this.

Please indicate whether you think they are adequate, easy to understand and follow and whether or not you find my voiceover, interesting, tedious, boring, unintelligible, too technical etc? Are there any procedures you do not understand?

Hi Bill,

I've had a quick look and listen and I think they're great. Your voice is easy to listen to and the videos make it easy to follow the instructions.

You got a wee bit technical when talking about macros, but overall I think you are on the right track. Good stuff!

I think maybe I should add some soothing music over the opening titles & the "The End" sign.

It's interesting that YouTube now enables you to do some remote video editing. Basic stuff of course.

Bill, you are a true gent for doing this. If their was BSG honours I would recommend you for a Knighthood for services to the BCG.

Aye, sorry about that it doesn't work onna Mac.

I can supply a version without the macros, which should give the correct paragraph styles on a Mac, but there would be none of the automatic stuff shown in videos 2 & 3.

I've never had a Mac OS/X computer of my own, so no way of writing a Mac version, it doesn't produce enough income to pay for a Mac. My old Macs were OS 8 & now waaaay out of date & have been mothballed.

Do the YouTube videos display correctly on your Mac?

Will, you could try Parallels desktop or virtual box. I don't own a Mac but this could be a solution (albeit an expensive one if you don't own a copy of windows or office for windows).

Using the Toolkit
These videos are done with Windows XP and Word 2003, but the procedures are very similar for Windows7 with Word 2007/2010, so users with later software should still be able to use these tutorials.

I'm not into breezy style videos like that, I'm the factual 'University Lecturer' type.

It takes long enough just to get the facts down.

Also I'm not really into trying to explain my Toolkit to those who would never be bright enough to be script writers anyway.

The Toolkit videos mentioned above don't actually have any REAL video in them, they are all screen captures then edited with Windows Movie Maker.

The verbal commentary was added afterwards for those recorded on Windows 7 because I hadn't sorted out the microphone on that computer. I've learned how to do those add-on commentaries now, the trick is to do it in very short pieces of only a few seconds speech at a time. This stops you losing the thread of what you are saying and getting out of sync with the action on the recorded screen.

I did a tutorial with real video a couple of years ago, which is closer to that Aussie style, called "How to Clean A Mouse". I made it because I was fed up with cleaning computer mice for customers. At the time that video was a bit to long for the YouTube limit then. I'll dig it out & shorten it a bit to be less than 15 minutes & put it up on YouTube sometime.

I've done a new intro page (in the form of a script).
