Wikidata

Has BCG thought of integrating with Wikidata?

Wikidata is a database that is part of Wikipedia and (as well as tons of over stuff) contains facts and links about comedians for example Mo Omar's is

https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q100509791

Lucy Porter's is

https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6698467

Dan Mitchell's

https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5214037

It would seem a good place to draw information on to enhance each comedians bio page, (for example) it would help people find more about the "up and coming" comedians without you having to add in all their details.

Yes but you can never trust what's on Wikipedia.

It's an interesting proposition - not something I'd come across before - but as Chappers says, Wikipedia is too untrustworthy. I come across legions of incorrect information all the time.

BCG can also be wrong of course, but we cross-reference and aim to get in touch with individuals and organisations to clarify as much as possible, in order to be as confident as we can about the data we're sharing. We wouldn't wish to eschew that in favour of a third party source.

Plus, data is our bread and butter and we like putting it in. :-)

Thanks for the suggestion though Neil!

The main rule of the "Only Connect" programme is that they will not accept any verification of a question that is referenced to any Wiki source. It must have two references in say, the Enc.Brit. or any of the established dictionaries, newspapers, TV etc. etc.

You're right, so in wikidata, each entry should have a reference, any that don't should be taken with pinch of salt.

Perhaps (secretly) store it in their record and use it as part of your data input/validation method, or to encourage the comedians to engage with you, people love to correct so if you write to them with "this is what I found on Wikipedia" they are more likely to respond that to "can you give me x y z info"

Anyway, keep up the good work.
