Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie has had a strong opening weekend at the box office, taking more than £4 million.

Box office figures reveal that the film took a total of £4.02m in the UK and Ireland over the weekend. This makes it the biggest British film since James Bond movie Spectre in October 2015, and the biggest UK opening in Fox Searchlight Pictures' history.

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie sees the sitcom cast, including central stars Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley, reprising their roles to appear alongside a host of celebrity guests in a plot that sees Edina and Patsy flee to the French Riviera after accidentally pushing Kate Moss into the River Thames at an über-fashionable launch party.

The strong box office figures lend to the likelihood of producers being keen to make a sequel. Speaking at last week's premiere, Jennifer Saunders said she would be interested in writing another film if lots of people went to watch this one.

Speaking about the performance of the film, Cameron Saunders from Twentieth Century Fox said: "We are thrilled that audiences have embraced Edina and Patsy's big screen debut - it is a testament to Jennifer, Joanna and the talented team behind the film who really are absolutely fabulous."
