The Smiths (Granada) by Julian Roach is the last situation comedy being tried out in Comedy Firsts. No wonder they are called pilots. They remind you of early aviators trying to fly in matchstick planes on thermals of hope. Now those were funny. The Smiths specialises in double entendres and cheerful rudery. Something like The Simpsons with smut. [...] It's not too bad. It's distinctive, the cast is creditable and there is no laughter track, which is positively brave - like an early aviator.
