Broadcasting between 9th March 1930 and 31st August 1939, the National Programme was the BBC's single nationally-broadcast radio station. Its sister was the Regional Programme, which, must like the local stations today, was a network rather than a single channel. On 1st September, the Second World War formally broke out and the two stations were merged: the Home Service was born.
