It really shouldn't be. It's a large apartment complex, with both apartment buildings and townhouses. The management here puts applicants through a rigorous screening process. Can you pay your rent?
Do you have a pulse? That's about it. We've had more of our fair share of child molesters, rapists, arsonists, drug dealers, and child abusers come through here. By some sort of miracle they never stay long, but they shouldn't be here in the first place. Our section is loaded with small children who aren't supervised. I've personally called the police at least a dozen times in the past 6 months. I can't wait until we can afford to move out.

I was asked if I had any criminal convictions or such, but didn't have to prove not.

Yep, that's all they care about. But it makes for interesting writing material for me. 
And I'm the cool mom of the neighbourhood, so any of the kids know they can come here. I always have an extra or two for dinner, because their parents aren't around.
