Never thought of the householder being SH and just assumed that deerstalkers were de rigueur for burglars at that time. Yes/No? :D

Perhaps he wore it so that people would think he was Sherlock Holmes and therefore what he was doing was legit. Now if he had had a striped jumper on, mask and his bag was marked in big letters "SWAG", that would have been a giveaway. :)
