Quote: Hercules Grytpype Thynne @ 18th May 2025, 3:25 PMI've noticed, for a number of years, how when a corner kick is taken, the ball has been placed by the corner taker, very much on the edge of the quadrant, and I noticed an extreme version of this in the Cup Final on Saturday, when the MC player taking the corner (about 5 to minutes into the game) placed the ball clearly outside of the quadrant!
So, what is the actual rule on this?!?
I quote from the IFAB rule on this, which seems to me to be extraordinary! And contradictory.............
"When a corner kick is taken, the ball must be on or overhanging the arc or fully inside the corner area."
Or overhanging the arc?!?!?! Then what is the point of the quadrant, is it only a guide, on how much the can player take the piss.
Well it is as the guidance says. If any part of the ball is overhanging the arc then it's legit. If none of the ball is overhanging the arc then it's not legit.
In the same way as the whole of the ball has to be over the line for a goal to be scored or for it to be out of play, if the whole of the ball is outside the corner quadrant, then it is not correctly placed. In the scoring of a goal or the ball being out of play, the ball can, for example, bounce over the line but the whole of the ball may not have crossed it. The same principle applies here.
