Dear Claire,
Some of the other lessees in my block of luxury apartments (aka flats) have composed a joint letter to the managing agents & the freeholders and they are asking all the rest of us to sign the letter as well.
My problem is that, on reading the letter, I noticed a split infinitive in the very first sentence. Obviously I cannot condone such a grammatical faux pas; nor do I want to risk insulting the writer of the letter by pointing it out. I have no problem with the subject of the letter. Should I sign the letter and forever be derided by the recipients for the use of a split infinitive or should I decline to sign it and thus avoid eternal embarrassment?
