Questions about comedy

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate forum, but I've recently become fascinated by the intricacies of jokes. Given that many of you on this message board are comedians (or aspire to be), or simply have a strong interest in comedy, I thought I might find some valuable insights here. For those willing to respond, I have a few brief questions.

1. In your view, what is the most crucial aspect(s) of telling a joke effectively?
2. Is there a specific structure to a joke that tends to make it funnier?

1. The timing and also enthusiasm or belief in the Material helps
2. put the surprise right at the end

Length, timing and of course a good punchline are the most important. Sometimes profanity can enhance the joke but when overused it can ruin it which seems to be all too common these days with contemporary comics who think that throwing in a few F words will disguise a weak joke. Dave Allen is a good example of how to do it properly.
