There are generally two types of people who decide to sit down and write a sitcom script (outside of those who have already enjoyed some professional success).

Firstly, there is the hobbyist/have-a-goist. They tend to have an idea, sit down and write it - and maybe send it off to a competition or two.

This group aren't too bothered about any kind of career. They're primarily doing it for fun. Whether their script "works" or impresses producers is of limited interest to them.

The second group wants a career. Their scripts are designed to further their ambitions, rather than scratch...
