Morecambe and Wise - Be Wise Don't Drink and Drive

One of the earliest drink-drive campaign films, this 1963 public information film starring Morecambe & Wise was unknown and hadn't been seen by the public for over 50 years before its discovery in 2018.

On making the film available widely to new audiences for the first time in 50+ years, Dick Fiddy, BFI Archive TV Programmer said; "Any rediscovered footage featuring Britain's most beloved double-act is precious, but the nature of this piece - urging the public to refrain from drinking and driving some 3 years before enforcing legislation was passed - distinguishes it as a true oddity."

Ninety seconds of pure comedy genius, the original 35mm film hasn't be seen by the public for over 50 years. The print was found in a box of 1960s-era 35mm cigarette advertisements recovered from Ulster Television who were in the process of moving to new premises in Belfast.

The rediscovered material was returned to the BFI National Archive via Kaleidoscope, the classic TV archive based in Birmingham. Chris Perry, CEO of Kaleidoscope added: "The smallest cans of film can sometimes yield the greatest discoveries. It was exciting to see such famous faces turn up unexpectedly when we inspected the film. Definitely one of the best, most memorable discoveries made by Kaleidoscope over the last 30 years."
