The Good Life

BBC One sitcom about a couple practicing self-sufficiency. 30 episodes (4 series), 1975 - 1978. Stars Richard Briers, Felicity Kendal, Penelope Keith and Paul Eddington.

Series 1, Episode 2 - Say Little Hen...

The journey of self-sufficiency continues with the introduction of Margot the goat, some shy hens and Lenin the cockerel. Margot and Jerry feel that an intervention is needed to bring the Goods back to normality. A light hearted confrontation between Tom and his old boss fails to change anything.

Further details

The Good begin turning their back garden into a miniature farm. Tom has removed the grass to reveal the earth, ready to be turned into a vegetable patch, whilst Barbara takes the glass out of a green house so that it can become a hen house. This sudden change in behaviour causes Margot and Jerry to plan an intervention, as they start to question Tom's mental state.

Tom and Jerry's former boss arrives for dinner and offers Tom his job back. The intervention fails spectacularly with Tom and Barbara arguing that they would rather live off the land, consuming its bounty than return to the canned food world. They leave the party in order to enjoy the fruits of their labour for dinner.

As the Leadbetters and Tom's former boss and his wife sit down for dinner in the garden they overhear Tom and Barbara who themselves are about to dine in their garden. The Goods sit down to a set table wearing their best clothes. The cloche is lifted to reveal Surbiton's first and last candlelit fried egg.
