Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing is returning, British Comedy Guide can exclusively reveal.
Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse are appearing in Southampton tonight on the first night of their live, six show mini-tour, An Evening With Mortimer & Whitehouse, before resuming filming on an undisclosed number of episodes of the popular BBC Two angling series.
Pre-production began last month, and it is believed that both a Christmas special and full fifth series have been commissioned.
Locations for the new episodes currently remain under wraps, with the show having grown its audience from an average of 1.96 million over the course of the third series in 2020, to 2.31 million for the fourth last year.
It was nominated in the best features category of the BAFTAs on Sunday night but lost to Big Zuu's Big Eats, missing out for a fourth time at the awards.
Made by Mortimer and Whitehouse's production company, Owl Power, the series follows the comics, who have been friends since the 1980s and both undergone major heart surgery in recent years, navigating the nation's riverbanks whilst discussing life, comedy, and indulging in 'heart-healthy' foods.
Whitehouse, an enthusiastic and experienced angler, tutors Mortimer, a keen but novice fisherman, on the art of the catch - with frequently mixed results - as they take in the beautiful countryside scenery, cook and savour the slower pace of life that angling affords them. A tie-in book for the series, Mortimer & Whitehouse - Gone Fishing: Life, Death And The Thrill Of The Catch, was published by Blink Publishing in 2019.
Series 4 of the show is currently being repeated on BBC Two and all episodes are available on iPlayer.
