Sky has confirmed that cop sitcom Code 404 will return for a third series.

The news was exclusively revealed by British Comedy Guide two months ago, but has only now been announced by the broadcaster.

They said today: "They're back to delete crime... Sky Original Code 404 - the futuristic crime-fighting comedy starring Stephen Graham, Daniel Mays and Anna Maxwell Martin - will return for a third series on Sky Comedy and streaming service NOW."

Producers tease: "When one of SIU's own is murdered, Major and Carver become hellbent on solving the case and proving their worth. But it's bigger than they thought. Forensic psychologist Professor McAllister is brought in to work the case; but still the killer manages to evade capture and wreak havoc. Can they hunt the killer down before it's too late?"

A picture has been released of the cast at a read-through of the new scripts:

Sky explain: "This announcement follows the great success of the first two series of Code 404, with the second series becoming the biggest season launch in the history of the Sky Comedy channel, while the first series of Code 404 was Sky's fastest binged original comedy boxset ever.

"Series 3 welcomes back Daniel Mays and Stephen Graham as the AI-enhanced "supercop" DI John Major and his long-suffering partner DI Roy Carver, along with Anna Maxwell Martin, Rosie Cavaliero, Michelle Greenidge, Richard Gadd, Amanda Payton, Tracy-Ann Oberman and Michael Armstrong. This series also introduces to the cast Vinette Robinson as Professor McAllister and Daniel Lawrence Taylor as journalist Searle."

The series - written by Daniel Peak and directed by Al Campbell - is expected to be broadcast in 2022.

The first two series are available on demand now, and are also on DVD.

Code 404 - Series 1 & 2

Sky One's hit comedy Series 1 and 2.

Series 1
John Major had it all: wife, best friend, glittering career in the police force... when his cover was blown and he met an untimely death. One year later, he's back - part AI and better than ever... or so he'd like to believe. Full of glitches, he's got to track down the person who shot him, prove himself as a cop so as not to get shut down, save his marriage and his friendship with his partner to boot.

Series 2
DI John Major and DI Roy Carver were the top crime fighting duo in the Unit but when an undercover sting went horribly wrong, Major was gunned down on the job and killed. As an 'asset' considered too valuable to lose, his body was fast-tracked into an experimental Artificial Intelligence project to bring him back from the dead. The only problem is, Major 2.0 may look like and sound like the original, but something was lost in translation - quite a lot actually. Oh, and if that wasn't enough, thinking her husband is dead, Major's wife has fallen in love with Carver. Somehow, Major's error-strewn hunches and Carver's scrambling to make good allows them to just about scrape by - but for how long?
