Billie Piper (pictured) has signed up to star in a new BBC Three sitcom, it has been announced.

Tom And Jenny will be piloted by the channel later this year, with the former Dr Who and Secret Diary Of A Call Girl actress taking on the lead female role.

Billed as a younger version of the movie War of the Roses, Tom And Jenny is described as a "high-octane" sitcom about a feuding couple who are forced to continue living together after a break-up as neither agrees to leave the house they have bought.

The pilot is being formulated by Star Stories and The Kevin Bishop Show writer Lee Hupfield, and will be produced by Objective Productions, whose other credits include Peep Show, John Bishop's Britain, and Reggie Perrin.

New BBC Three controller Zai Bennett, who commissioned the pilot, says: "It'll be quite raucous - a little like a live action cartoon - and has lots of effects in it such as slow-mo and bullet time."

Ben Palmer, who has just finished overseeing The Inbetweeners Movie, is rumoured to be directing the sitcom.
