Getting On has been recommissioned for a third series, it has been confirmed.

The BBC Four comedy drama is written by and stars Jo Brand, Vicki Pepperdine and Joanna Scanlan as staff in an over-stretched NHS hospital. Famously, Brand worked as a psychiatric nurse before turning to comedy.

Until today's news, revealed on Twitter by Pepperdine, unconfirmed rumours lead many to believe that the series would not be returning, despite calls amongst some BBC executives - notably new BBC One controller Danny Cohen - for more "blue collar" comedy.

For her role in the show, Jo Brand yesterday picked up the award for 'Female Performance in a Comedy Role' at the BAFTA Television Awards.

Vicki Pepperdine confirmed to the British Comedy Guide that Series 3 will consist of 6 episodes. Directed by Peter Capaldi, better known as The Thick Of It's Malcolm Tucker, the series will be produced by Vera Productions. The BBC's controller of comedy commissioning, Cheryl Taylor, said: "We are thrilled that both the superb comedy performances and wonderful writing of Getting On have recently been recognised by both BAFTA and the RTS."
