The Inbetweeners could return, but without the original creators or cast involved.

According to trade magazine Broadcast, the production company that now owns the rights to the hit sitcom is looking for ways to "revamp and revitalise" the show.

The Inbetweeeners last aired on E4 in 2010 and finally concluded on the big screen in 2014 with the box office success The Inbetweeners 2. However, producer Peter Langenberg from Banijay UK, the production company that now owns the format, is reportedly looking for ways to "reboot the show for a new generation".

Langenberg has indicated that if a new version went ahead it would have to re-cast the roles of Will Mackenzie, Simon Cooper, Jay Cartwright and Neil Sutherland. He said: "It's not feasible for the cast to reprise their roles at that stage of life, but the brand is so strong that I'm definitely interested in seeing if we could take a new spin on it."

The Inbetweeners originally starred Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, James Buckley and Blake Harrison. It was created and written by Damon Beesley and Iain Morris through their production company, Bwark Productions. The company joined Zodiak Media, which then merged into Banijay in 2016, meaning Banijay now owns the rights to the show.

Beesley & Morris have since left Bwark to set up a new production company, Fudge Park. It means they no longer have control over the rights to their hit show.

The duo are now working on producing new comedies Ill Behaviour and White Gold through Fudge Park. The latter is a BBC Two sitcom about a double-glazing showroom in Essex which will co-star Joe Thomas and James Buckley, who played Simon and Jay in The Inbetweeners.

If the new reboot goes ahead it won't be the first adaptation of the format. The Inbetweeners was remade for the MTV network in America in 2012 with a US cast in the lead roles, but the network soon cancelled it due to low ratings.
