The Thick Of It, Armando Iannucci's dark political comedy set in the corridors of the British government, picked up the comedy award at today's South Bank Show Awards.

The award was presented to the programme by Billy Connolly at a ceremony held at The Dorchester hotel today.

The Thick Of It beat Home Time and The Inbetweeners to claim the prize.

Melvyn Bragg will present the televised broadcast of the South Bank Show Awards on ITV1 on Sunday. This year marks the end of the awards as ITV has now axed the long-running arts programme.

Earlier in the week, The Thick Of It was named Comedy Of The Year in the Comedy.co.uk Awards 2009.
