Poirot star David Suchet has joined the cast of Peter Pan Goes Wrong, the comic play that will be shown on BBC One this Christmas.

The acclaimed actor will guest star in the one-off show, which will be filmed in front of a live audience in Pinewood Studios tonight and tomorrow.

Suchet, who will also appear alongside Jack Whitehall in a new adaptation of Decline And Fall and has a role in the new series of Doctor Who, will be on-screen as the narrator who finds himself caught up in the mayhem.

Written by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields of Mischief Theatre, Peter Pan Goes Wrong is a play within a play. Audiences are invited to watch a performance by an amateur theatre group - and in their show, nothing goes to plan; from dodgy props to bad acting and staging mishaps.

The show, a sequel to the award-winning The Play That Goes Wrong, has been adapted for television from the script of the West End hit stage show.

The BBC explains: "In keeping with Mischief Theatre's slapstick style, the premise of Peter Pan Goes Wrong is that the BBC has allowed the amateur dramatics group to put on a show as part of this year's Christmas offering. What could possibly go wrong? As The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society tries to recreate the J. M. Barrie classic, a series of onstage catastrophes and backstage blunders continue to occur."

David Suchet comments: "I am delighted to be part of this brilliantly funny television production for all the family to enjoy this Christmas time."

BBC commissioner Shane Allen says: "This is a terrific endorsement for the show. David's natural gravitas and sublime comic timing makes him the perfect narrator to play off against the unfolding shambles around him in this comedy tour de force."

Peter Pan Goes Wrong will be broadcast on BBC One in December. The stage production returns to the West End later this year, for which tickets are now available.
